The apparent simplicity of Halbrite masks the statistical significance of it's precisely straight spokes, and the apparent care to quarter the space.

Site Plan & Local Topography:


Setting:        Caps a small knoll on a rolling ridge 500m east of the Souris River.

Brief:             An 8m diameter, 2m high central cairn with four radiating spokes, the eastern two of which had been truncated by a road at the time of the survey.   A 1907 excavation of the central cairn discovered human burial artifacts.

Design:         The design intent at Halbrite was most obviously a cross.  If the cross is aligned to anything, its multiple directions make that difficult to prove.  Without spoke-end cairns and considering road-building disturbance, other forms of useful variability are
