This system is cute, but too much work. "Smart" street lights should turn on individually as cars or people approach, according to evolving local and personal contexts.

The Germans’ latest discovery is a system for sparsely populated urban areas which makes it possible to activate public lighting systems from a mobile phone.

The system, known as Dial4light, was tested for nearly a year in Dörentrup, a small German town of roughly 9,000 inhabitants, where public lighting, at least in certain areas, remains off all night. If truly necessary, it can be activated by calling the six-digit number which identifies that particular lighting system. This way, if you are walking home at night, all you need to do is dial a number, and the light comes on for about fifteen minutes or so.
