What a great job and fortunate opportunity for an eager stargazer in his early twenties!

The (then) UBC Geophysics and Astronomy Department wished to establish a public astronomical observatory in 1980 and I accepted the full-time position of Director of Observatories to cover building the astronomical and geophysical facilities, and establishing the research, teaching and public programs associated with them. I commissioned the 42cm Cassegrain-Coude reflector telescope, dome, spectrographs, instrumentation and laboraties. I created and taught an extensive set of teaching programs for graduate, undergraduate, public school and continuing education audiences.
