The (then) UBC Geophysics and Astronomy Department wished to serve public interests and teaching obligations with respect to astronomy (stars, planets, comets, etc) and geophysics (earthquakes, volcanoes, glaciers, etc) and so established the position of Curator in 1980. I commissioned Observatories and established programs for public, school and continuing education audiences.
