From Thomas Vanderwal's blog on the history and future of tagging systems. Dated August 2007.

Some of the suggested features (for enterpise):

  • Portability & interoperability of tags
  • Ability to move externally tagged items into firewall
  • Granular tag monitoring based on identity & co-occurance
  • Tag analysis to identify others with similar interests
  • stemming to align versions of the same word (e.g. tag, tags, tagging, bookmark, bookmarking)
  • Tag disambiguation by offering co-occurrence options (e.g. appleseed and anime or johnny or gardening or apple)
  • String matching to identify facets for time and date, names (from your address book), products, secret tag terms (to have them blocked from sharing), etc.
